FACT OF THE DAY
🤔 The AI industry currently employs over 300,000 professionals globally, spanning roles in research, data science, ethics, and more, but the demand for talent is outpacing supply, as the industry is expected to contribute over $15.7T to the global economy by 2030.
🦁 AI stocks roared last week after the first interest rate cuts were announced. It will be interesting to see if the rally can continue this week or if it has been overdone and will have to rebalance. Learn more.
Our Story: Legendary ex-Apple designer, Jony Ive (famous for his work on the early designs of the iPhone, iPad, iPod, MacBook, and other Apple devices), has finally confirmed—after a year of speculation—that he and OpenAI CEO—Sam Altman—have formed a startup and are working on an AI hardware project together.
🔑 Key Points:
Details of the collaboration are scarce, and influential industrial designer, Marc Newson—who is working with Ive and Altman on the project—said the product specifics and launch date haven’t been decided yet.
Reportedly, the project has 10 employees—including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey (who worked with Ive on the iPhone)—who are working from a 32,000-sq-ft office (part of a $90M piece of real estate that Ive bought in SF).
Ive, Emerson Collective, and Laurene Powell Jobs’ company will fund the start-up and will raise $1B by the end of the year, but there’s no mention of SoftBank CEO, Masayoshi Son, rumored to have invested $1B last year.
🤔 Why you should care: While no one knows exactly what the new AI hardware device will be, Ive’s own company—LoveFrom—is leading the design and has confirmed the goal is to “build a product that uses AI to create a computing experience that is less socially disruptive than the iPhone,” and last year it was though the new device would be inspired by touchscreen technology and the original iPhone.

Our Report: Microsoft has signed a deal with nuclear plant operator Constellation Energy, to use 100% of its output to power its AI data centers, from the infamous—and about-to-be revived—Three Mile Island Unit 1 plant nuclear power plant.
🔑 Key Points:
If the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves the project, it’s expected to create over 3,400 jobs and generate over $3B in taxes, and Constellation will invest $1.6B to revive the plant by 2028.
The plant—situated next to TMI-Unit 2, which was closed in 1979, after the worst US nuclear accident in history—was shuttered in 2019, after demand for nuclear energy fell, as people sought cheaper alternatives.
Microsoft will buy power from the plant—which will be renamed “The Crane Clean Energy Center” in honor of the late Chris Crane, former CEO of Constellation—for the next 20 years, in a first-of-its-kind deal.
🤔 Why you should care: If it’s approved, this agreement will be a “major milestone in Microsoft’s efforts to decarbonize the grid” and would help it achieve its goal of running its data centers on clean energy by 2025.

At the UN ‘Summit of the Future’, Google’s CEO—Sundar Pichai—announced a $120M global fund, that will “make AI education and training available around the world,” in partnership with local nonprofits.
He thinks AI is “the most transformative technology,” and the fund will help people access information, accelerate scientific discovery, provide alerts for climate disasters, and fuel economic progress.
Believing the fund could prevent a widening “AI divide,” Pichai asked for “smarter regulation that mitigates harms and resists national protectionist impulses” otherwise AI will benefit few.
Google is testing a new feature (in its experimental channel, ‘Chrome Canary’) that will get users to use a PIN, fingerprint recognition, or face authentication before they can auto-fill saved logins on websites.
The goal is to strengthen the security of login information and reduce the risk of unauthorized access after growing concerns about the increasingly sophisticated tech that allows hackers to access stored logins.
It’s also testing a feature that uses ML to translate web pages, in real-time, on Android devices, so users can search open tabs on their mobiles, something that’s been available on desktop for a while.
