Our Report: The State Senate of California has passed the controversial AI Safety Bill—SB 1047—with a 29-9 voting split in favor of the Bill, so it’s now down to Governor Gavin Newsom to make the final decision about whether the Bill (which aims to prevent large AI models from harming humanity, and make AI developers liable for their choices) should be signed or dismissed.
🔑 Key Points:
Newsom has until September 30th to weigh up the pros (preventing extreme theoretical risks of AI systems) against the cons (squashing the California AI boom) and hasn’t yet indicated whether he’s for or against it.
If he signs it, by January 1st, 2025, tech companies will have to write safety reports for their AI models, and the attorney general will have the power to stop any AI model they deem dangerous.
By 2026, a board will start advising the attorney general about which AI models do/don’t comply with SB 1047 and, by 2027, it will start issuing AI safety guidance to AI developers.
🤔 Why you should care: The Bill has been widely contested by politicians, industry leaders, and tech companies in Silicon Valley who argue that it could stifle innovation and a set of federal regulations would be better than a set of state-based rules, which could be because federal regulators tend to produce less restrictive legislation.

Our Report: Far-right activists and convicted fraudsters, Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl, have secretly founded an AI-centric lobbying firm— LobbyMetric—under fake names: Jay Klein and Bill Sanders.
🔑 Key Points:
Founded last year, LobbyMetric is an AI platform for lobbyists that leverages AI to automatically monitor congressional hearings or “supercharge research” into legislative and regulatory issues.
According to the website, LobbyMetric’s technology can monitor hearings, ascertain which lawmakers are important for certain issues, and either schedule meetings with them or petition them.
The felons, under their pseudonyms, secured some big-name clients (including Toyota, consulting firm, Boundary Stone Partners, and drug company, Lantheus) for a 3-month test run.
🤔 Why you should care: Wohl and Burkman were convicted in 2022 for telecom fraud after running a robocall campaign in several states, telling people not to vote in the 2020 presidential election, and were ordered to spend 500 hours registering people to vote and given a $5M fine.
